Mahler, Sinfonie Nr.7, New York Phil, L. Maazel (LIVE, June Message List
Reply | Forward Message #34219 of 46778 < Prev < Prev | Next > Next >
The final concert of the New York Phil's 2006/2007 season, this performance of
Mahler's
Seventh conducted by Lorin Maazel is quite something. For one thing it is
massive - at
almost 90 minutes in length (he takes 26 minutes over the first movement alone)
it's one of
the longest I can recall (even allowing for applause after the first movement).
Yet, the
performance never seems to lose momentum, and the Rondo-Finale is breathtaking.
As is the
playing - from the outset the brass of the New York Phil are in sensational
shape. Perhaps
not a performance for every day listening, but as a one off concert it must have
made quite
an impact.

Martinon/CSO Bizet Symphony in C (April 21, 1966)
Martinon/Chicago Symphony material being posted, I'd like to contribute
a wonderful performance that I taped from a 1977 post-CSO Marathon re-
broadcast of Bizet's Symphony in C that was given in Orchestra Hall on
April 21, 1966. The sound, from the unsurpassed broadcast signal
quality of WFMT, Chicago is superb. The file is uploaded as an mp3 at
320Kbps. The performance, which preceded the conductor's and
orchestra's RCA recording, easily goes in a class with the 1962
Munch/RPO (Reader's Digest/Chesky) and 1963 Bernstein/NYP (CBS/Sony),
Richard Strauss Tod und Verkla"rung (Death and Transfiguration)
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Jean Martinon, conductor
In-concert recording, October 20, 1966
Be'la Barto'k Concerto for Orchestra

Unfortunatly, neither have made it to current CSO's collector CD
sets.; it's a pity (scandal?) Martinon isn't more substantially
represented in existing editions (though his 1967 Mahler 3 is
spectacular!).

They are all live-recordings broadcast by Radio France

but ILve found no trace. Main piece is from Wagner Go"tterda"mmerung the

Fascinating concert in excellent sound - most likely mono with slight
phase difference between channels on my source, but I uploaded it as
joint stereo at 192 kbps with cuesheets. If anyone could clarify the
venue for this concert, I'd be grateful.
Here's an absolute thriller of a Tchaikovsky Manfred Symphony with
Constantin Silvestri with the Philadelphia Orchestra from November
24/25, 1961. I'll continue with the Britten Purcell Vars. and a work
by Silvestri that concluded this concert next time. I don't see any
issue of this concert anywhere. This is from a CDR made from a 1st
gen. reel to reel copy off the master.
Meanwhile thanks to pyochungsa for finally completing my Dvorak 7-9
with the 9th this morning. I've also got the EMI Elgar "In the South"
Overture ready to go, as I see it's OOP, and it's another desert
island Silvestri performance.

All with the Orchestre National de l'ORTF's orchestra and I think all
from Paris, but unfortunately I did not write down the original

Kertesz, Gabre-Mahler 4th, Philadelphia Orchestra
Another 35+ year old reel-to-reel tape recording of a live concert broadcast
unearthed. I do
not have a date on this one, but Istvan Kertesz and his wife, soprano Edith
Gabre, were
touring with the Mahler 4th around about 1969. Sorry: sound is less than ideal
with
significant "shatter" in the loudest passages at the end of the first movement
and at the
climax to the third.
For what it's worth, stereo, 192 kbps mp3 upload.

---------
Istvan Kertesz's career was just about to take off at the time of his sudden
death by
drowning at the age of 43 in 1973. The Hungarian's recorded legacy showed a
stylistic
affinity for Mozart, but he really made his name with his set of all nine Dvorak
symphonies, recorded with the London Symphony in the 1960s. Amazingly, these
recordings were made "cold"--orchestra and conductor had not performed them in
concert! As good as these recordings were, Kertesz live in concert in the late
1960s and
early 1970s was an electrifying presence. I have a small number of his concerts
taped
from FM broadcast. Here's one with the Cleveland Orchestra from the early 70s:
Mozart,
Kodaly, and Dvorak. Mozart's 39th symphony is a rich, big-orchestra
performance, but
still light on its feet; the Peacock Variations of Kodaly (one of Kertesz's
teachers) is a
rollicking performance; and the Dvorak stretches out way beyond Kertesz's much
earlier
studio effort in passion and power. Stereo sound, if somewhat bright and harsh,
an
unavoidable characteristic of Cleveland's Severance Hall.

There were actually two concerts performances: the one on the 14th
was at Royal Festival Hall and it was given again the next day in
Royal Albert Hall. The Decca Phase 4 release was cobbled together
from both concerts - The Wagner & half the Debussy are from Festival
Hall, as are the first moments of the Glazunov. The 2nd half of the
Faune, all of the Brahms and the Marche Slav were recorded in Albert
Hall. The different acoustic is quite apparent.
This is the entire concert of the 14th in Festival Hall complete with
announcements and the intermission feature.

In answer to a request for a performance by George Szell of the Richard
Strauss Serenade, Op. 9, I have a tape off an old radio broadcast with
Szell conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra; this seems to emanate
from the same concert at which he also conducted the Vier Letzte Lieder
with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Henkemans Barcarola fantastica--both of
which seem to be available on CD.
I'm sorry I don't have a taping of Szell conducting either of the
Strauss wind pieces with the Cleveland, but I am not aware of any
recorded performances of either of them.

Here is a complete concert from Tanglewood broadcast on August 24,
1969. The concert was the final one in the 7-year tenure of Erich
Leinsdorf as music director of the Boston Symphony. One point of
interest is Beverly Sills as the soprano soloist in Beethoven's
Ninth. There have been some uploads previously on OperaShare of just
the fourth movement in very poor sound. This newly discovered (for
me) recording of the complete work is infinitely more listenable in
good FM broadcast sound.

The great Russian pianist Emil Gilels in concert with Kiril Kondrashin
conducting Moscow Phil in Chopin's E min piano concerto. Very clear
transfer by Universita Degli Studi Di Trento as part of their
collection of public domain recordings.
The recording is in stereo, although the first movement sounds more
like a very spacious mono, than the genuine stereo of the remaining two
movements. For me, Gilels' playing and sonority in this live
performance are more electrifying than in his studio recording with
Ormandy/Phila Orch, fine though that recording is (and I am a big
Ormandy fan).

For those who wish it, I have upload part one of a Monteux/Philadelphia
Orchestra concert.
This includes the Tragic Overture and Hindemith's Mathis der Maler. This is the
first part of
the concert of March 5, 1960; the second half is the Schubert 9th that has
already been
uploaded.
This is stereo, 256 kps. Once you download the zipped file below you can expand
it to 5 mp3
files. The Tragic Overture and Mathis der Maler are one file each; the remaining
short files are
announcements and commentary by William Smith.
The sound is a bit duller than the Schubert 9th, but it's more than listenable.
My source is a
cassette copy of either a broadcast or a multi-generational radio station
master. Instrument

From the original post:
Here's another performance I was fortunate enough to attend, a rare
visit to the US by Annie Fischer, playing the Beethoven 3rd Concerto
on Nov. 6, 1982. David Zinman conducted the Rochester Philharmonic,
and I was an eager Eastman piano major at that time. So many people I
never did hear, but during my time at Eastman I also heard Horowitz &
Curzon there. I've got the Curzon Beethoven 4th from that visit, if
anyone would like to hear that.
Pretty good sound here, from my reel to reel taping of the broadcast.

Bruggen aims at a light, deft, approach which the orchestra responds

Inspired by Yoel's upload - thanks a lot for - here is another
recording of Mahler's monumental piece, given at the Musikhalle at
Hamburg in March 1954. As there is no audience listenable I think it
was a studio production, as the normal studio was too small for so
many performers.
I'm not quite sure, but this might have been one of the earliest
recordings of the work ever. Sound is quite good for the limits of the

akashi Asahina conducts Ignaz Dorn's Characteristic Sympho Message List
Reply | Forward Message #19678 of 47640 < Prev < Prev | Next > Next >
Titled Labyrinth Images or Dream and Awakening, Characteristic
Symphony, this live performance (year unknown) is played by the
Niederosterreichische Tonkunstler Orchester conducted by Takashi Asahina.
Asahina did conduct in Europe, especially Germany (there are a whole
series of NDR performances spanning almost 35 years) and in the USA
(predominantly with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra) but this is the
first recording I have come across with Asahina and this orchestra. It
is a rare addition to anyone's Asahina collection.
Until I heard this work, both composer and work were unfamiliar to me,
and even after an extensive search I still know little about Dorn. He
was Austrian, born in 1830 and died in 1872, and was a contemporary
and champion of Anton Bruckner. That is the extent of what I can
offer. No recordings of his works seem to be in print any where.
If anyone has any more information about Dorn please let me know.
The work spans just 27 minutes.
